‘Extremely Severe’ alert buzzes phones: Govt tests nationwide cell broadcast system as Govt tests nation-wide disaster alerting service. India’s new indigenous cell broadcast system for disaster alerts was tested on Saturday, startling many mobile users with a loud “Extremely Severe” notification.
Department of Telecommunications, Govt. of India tweets, “If you receive an Alert Message on your phone, do not panic. This is part of the testing of the Emergency Alert System, so that accurate information can be received on time during disasters. During testing, this message may appear repeatedly. Ignore it; you do not need to do anything.”
